Why this program

Credibility in planning comes from mastering the numbers behind the range.

Almost nobody studies merchandise planning formally. Most planners assemble the craft piece by piece from colleagues, spreadsheets and mistakes, and the gaps show up in buy meetings, trade reviews and interviews. This program closes those gaps systematically, and gives you a credential that says you did.

📊

Speak the language of the P&L

WSSI, open-to-buy, intake margin, stockturn, GMROI. Walk into any trade meeting or interview fluent in the vocabulary finance and leadership actually use, and able to do the maths behind every term.

🎯

Make defensible buying decisions

Learn the full method: forecast a rate of sale, size a buy, structure it for risk, phase the intake and plan the exit. Every technique comes with worked numbers you can follow line by line.

⚙️

Learn by doing, not just reading

Eleven built-in calculators, eight check-your-answer practice problems and four trading scenarios let you try each technique the moment you learn it, with instant feedback.

🏪

Learn from real retail history

Five documented case studies, from a two-year, multi-billion-dollar collapse to the operating models of the world's most efficient retailers, each tied back to the planning principle it proves. All sourced and cited.

📦

Master inventory end to end

Allocation, replenishment, safety stock, rebalancing, markdown timing and stock integrity, taught step by step from plain-language foundations to the full statistical models.

🎓

Finish with proof

Pass every module assessment and a rigorous final exam to earn the Institute's Certificate of Completion, with your name, score and a verifiable certificate ID.

The Institute

An institution for a profession that never had one.

Doctors, accountants and engineers have professional bodies that define what competence means. Merchandise planning, the discipline that decides how billions of dollars of retail inventory are bought, placed and sold, has mostly relied on knowledge passed desk to desk. The Merchandise Planning Institute was established by a collective of practising planning professionals to change that: to set down the discipline as a defined, teachable, assessable standard.

That is what makes the Institute's certificate meaningful to employers. It is not a certificate of attendance. It states a precise claim: the holder has studied the full planning cycle, worked the calculations by hand, faced realistic trading decisions, and passed every assessment at a published standard. A hiring manager can see the syllabus, the pass marks and the certificate ID, and know exactly what the credential represents.

For anyone building a career in retail or planning, that specificity is the credibility. Experience says where you have been; an Institute certificate says what you can do.

Practitioner-built and reviewedDeveloped by working planning professionals across footwear, apparel and multi-store retail, and kept current as the discipline evolves.
A published, defined standardAn open syllabus of 8 modules and 43 lessons, a 70% pass mark on every module and 80% on the final exam. The bar is visible to everyone, including employers.
Verifiable certificationEvery certificate carries the holder's name, completion date, final exam score and a unique certificate ID that can be quoted on a CV or LinkedIn profile.
Evidence, not endorsementCase studies are documented and cited, worked examples are complete, and the Institute makes no claim it cannot show. That discipline is the point of the profession, and of the program.
Who it's for

Two audiences, one standard.

The program is designed to take a newcomer to fluency and to sharpen professionals who learned the craft on the job.

Breaking into planning

Get into the field with real fluency

  • Build the complete foundation: the calendar, the hierarchy, the retail maths and every core KPI, from zero.
  • Walk into interviews able to build a WSSI, calculate an open-to-buy and size a buy quantity with confidence.
  • A searchable glossary of 75+ industry terms means the jargon of your first buy meeting will already be familiar.
  • Ideal for retail staff, allocators, analysts, graduates and career changers targeting planning roles.

No prior planning experience required. The program builds every concept from first principles.

Established planners

Turn experience into credentials

  • Formalise what you learned on the job and close the gaps nobody ever taught you properly.
  • Go deeper on the advanced toolkit: GMROI, GMROF and GMROL, statistical forecasting, markdown optimisation and omni-channel planning.
  • Pressure-test your instincts against decision scenarios and documented case studies.
  • Earn a certificate that evidences your expertise to current and future employers.

Also valuable for buyers, planning managers, founders and anyone who works alongside a planning team.

Career pathway

Built to move careers forward.

Planning careers progress on one thing above all: demonstrated command of the numbers. Allocators, junior planners and established planners who complete the program leave with a deeper, more connected understanding of the practice, and that understanding is precisely what the next role up demands.

Where you might start

Allocator / Assistant

You run allocations and replenishment but often execute decisions made above you. The program shows you the plans your work feeds into, so you can contribute to the why, not just the what, and be seen doing it.

First step up

Junior Planner

You own small categories and need the core toolkit to be second nature: the WSSI, open-to-buy, buy sizing and cover management. The program makes each one a method you can defend in a trade meeting, not a spreadsheet you inherited.

Established

Planner

You carry the number for real categories. The advanced modules sharpen the judgement calls: markdown timing, chase structures, range productivity and the GMRO family, the language of the leaders you report to.

Where it points

Senior Planner / Manager

Progression past here is about steering capital and people: arguing stock budgets with finance, setting strategy, coaching a team. The program's financial framing, case studies and capstone plan are built for exactly that conversation.

The pattern is consistent across retail: the people who progress are the ones who can explain their decisions in the language of sales, margin, stock and return. Completing the program gives you that language, evidence that you hold it, and a body of methods you will use in the next role before you have it. It cannot promise a promotion, and you should be wary of anything that does, but it removes the most common reason planning careers stall: gaps in the fundamentals that were never anyone's job to teach you.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Around 16 hours of study for most learners. It is fully self-paced: many complete it over three to four weeks alongside work, others take a season. Your progress is saved so you can stop and resume at any time.
No. Module 1 builds every concept from first principles, including the retail maths, and a searchable glossary explains every piece of industry terminology. Experienced planners can move quickly through the foundations and spend their time in the advanced modules and case studies.
Each of the eight modules ends with a knowledge check requiring 70% or better, and the final exam requires 80% or better. Assessments can be retaken as many times as you need, and every question comes with a full explanation so retakes are genuinely instructive.
No. It is a certificate of completion issued by the Merchandise Planning Institute, evidencing that you completed the full curriculum and passed all assessments at the published standard. It is designed to demonstrate practical capability to employers rather than to confer an academic award.
When you enrol, your receipt email contains a personal licence key. You sign in once at training.merchandiseplanninginstitute.com with that key and the program unlocks on your device for life. Each key works on a limited number of devices, enough for your laptop, tablet and phone, so your enrolment stays personal to you. Replaced a device? Contact us and we will reset your key.
The program gives you the fluency, methods and credential that planning careers are built on, and the certificate gives employers something concrete to verify. No course can honestly promise a specific job or promotion, and we won't. What we can say is that the gaps this program closes are the gaps that most commonly hold allocators and junior planners back.
The methods are universal and the content is deliberately country-neutral. Examples are drawn from footwear and apparel retail because size-level complexity makes them the most instructive setting, but the techniques apply across retail categories. Pricing is in US dollars.
Any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. The training, calculators and assessments all run in the browser with nothing to install.
