Merchandise Planning Mastery is the Institute's flagship certificate program. It teaches the whole discipline properly: the financial plan, the assortment, the buy, the stock and the analysis, from first principles through to the techniques experienced planners use every day.
Almost nobody studies merchandise planning formally. Most planners assemble the craft piece by piece from colleagues, spreadsheets and mistakes, and the gaps show up in buy meetings, trade reviews and interviews. This program closes those gaps systematically, and gives you a credential that says you did.
WSSI, open-to-buy, intake margin, stockturn, GMROI. Walk into any trade meeting or interview fluent in the vocabulary finance and leadership actually use, and able to do the maths behind every term.
Learn the full method: forecast a rate of sale, size a buy, structure it for risk, phase the intake and plan the exit. Every technique comes with worked numbers you can follow line by line.
Eleven built-in calculators, eight check-your-answer practice problems and four trading scenarios let you try each technique the moment you learn it, with instant feedback.
Five documented case studies, from a two-year, multi-billion-dollar collapse to the operating models of the world's most efficient retailers, each tied back to the planning principle it proves. All sourced and cited.
Allocation, replenishment, safety stock, rebalancing, markdown timing and stock integrity, taught step by step from plain-language foundations to the full statistical models.
Pass every module assessment and a rigorous final exam to earn the Institute's Certificate of Completion, with your name, score and a verifiable certificate ID.
Doctors, accountants and engineers have professional bodies that define what competence means. Merchandise planning, the discipline that decides how billions of dollars of retail inventory are bought, placed and sold, has mostly relied on knowledge passed desk to desk. The Merchandise Planning Institute was established by a collective of practising planning professionals to change that: to set down the discipline as a defined, teachable, assessable standard.
That is what makes the Institute's certificate meaningful to employers. It is not a certificate of attendance. It states a precise claim: the holder has studied the full planning cycle, worked the calculations by hand, faced realistic trading decisions, and passed every assessment at a published standard. A hiring manager can see the syllabus, the pass marks and the certificate ID, and know exactly what the credential represents.
For anyone building a career in retail or planning, that specificity is the credibility. Experience says where you have been; an Institute certificate says what you can do.
The program is designed to take a newcomer to fluency and to sharpen professionals who learned the craft on the job.
No prior planning experience required. The program builds every concept from first principles.
Also valuable for buyers, planning managers, founders and anyone who works alongside a planning team.
Planning careers progress on one thing above all: demonstrated command of the numbers. Allocators, junior planners and established planners who complete the program leave with a deeper, more connected understanding of the practice, and that understanding is precisely what the next role up demands.
You run allocations and replenishment but often execute decisions made above you. The program shows you the plans your work feeds into, so you can contribute to the why, not just the what, and be seen doing it.
You own small categories and need the core toolkit to be second nature: the WSSI, open-to-buy, buy sizing and cover management. The program makes each one a method you can defend in a trade meeting, not a spreadsheet you inherited.
You carry the number for real categories. The advanced modules sharpen the judgement calls: markdown timing, chase structures, range productivity and the GMRO family, the language of the leaders you report to.
Progression past here is about steering capital and people: arguing stock budgets with finance, setting strategy, coaching a team. The program's financial framing, case studies and capstone plan are built for exactly that conversation.
The pattern is consistent across retail: the people who progress are the ones who can explain their decisions in the language of sales, margin, stock and return. Completing the program gives you that language, evidence that you hold it, and a body of methods you will use in the next role before you have it. It cannot promise a promotion, and you should be wary of anything that does, but it removes the most common reason planning careers stall: gaps in the fundamentals that were never anyone's job to teach you.
Self-paced, around 16 hours of study. Each module ends with a knowledge check, and the final exam unlocks once every module is passed.
The certificate is earned, not attended. You pass eight module assessments at 70% or better and a comprehensive final exam at 80% or better. Assessments draw on the full material and can be retaken as you learn.
A single payment per user, with lifetime access. Study at your own pace and sit the assessments when you are ready.
Enrolling a team? Each team member enrols individually so every certificate is personal. For five or more seats, contact the Institute about invoicing.
